To Kenya now, where the UN Habitat Assembly is drawing to a close. The event aims to showcase innovative solutions to simple human problems in the face of climate change. CGTN's Robert Nagila visited the UN complex in Nairobi to find out how innovators are helping Africans to go green.
ROBERT NAGILA NAIROBI "It's day four of the UN habitat assembly and today we are focusing on innovative solutions to some of the challenges within our environment and urban development."
"Hi, my name is Phillip, I am the CEO Opibus and we build electric vehicle and electric motorbikes."
FILIP LOVSTROM CO-FOUNDER, OPIBUS "Conceptually it is really simple, it has a motor in the rear wheel, it has batteries under this covers and a control unit here Your charging time comes to about 20 seconds because that is how long it takes to remove your battery and put another one in. Buying a normal petrol bike for 120,000 and then downing 500 shillings per day on fuel or buying a flex bike for 120,000 and spending 200 shillings a day."
"Hi, My name is Mercy Wamboi, representing knights energy company."
MERCY WAMBOI KNIGHTS ENERGY "We are a solar company and what we have here is a solar home set up. We have a lot of electrical appliances that run through solar. Here we have an electric vehicle and other home appliances running through solar. You can decide to make your home smart. You can remotely control every gadget, every electrical appliance you have in your home through a smart phone or laptop."
"Hello, my name is Martin Ndoungtio, we build Aquaponic systems."
MARTINO NDOUNGTIO UN HABITAT "Aquaponic is a method of agriculture that uses recirculating water from a fish tank and the nutrients produced from the fish to feed the plants and then it gets filtered by the plants and falls back to where the fish are. In the case of lettuce, they tend to take 3 months from seedlings to a plant whereas when grown by aquaponic system they take about 6 weeks."
"I am Vincent Kitio, chief of the urban energy unit at UN habitat."
VINCENT KITIO UN HABITAT ENERGY UNIT "This structure in terms of putting it together we have done it in 10 days $18,500."
"All what you see there. Personally, there is a lot one can do to protect the environment like ditching your vehicle and riding a bicycle. RN, CGTN, NK."
