Despite its current situation, Huawei has held a global contest in the field of information technology in southern China's city of Dongguan. Participants from Malaysia, Algeria, Peru and China won top prizes. CGTN reporter Ge Yunfei has the story.
The global final of the Huawei Information Communication Technology Competition, a top-level event for students in the field, concluded on Sunday at the company's new headquarters. There were four first-prize winners, from China, Malaysia, Peru and Algeria.
TEAM ALGERIA HUAWEI ICT COMPETITION "It's our first time to participate in this event, and it was great."
"I can't put into words how happy we are."
"This win wasn't only for us, but our families, and the Huawei staff in Algeria."
The competition is one of the ways Huawei is using to recruit and nurture new talent. Two years ago, the tech firm Tencent said there were only a few hundred thousand AI personnel around the world, but millions were needed.
CHEN ZHONG, DEPUTY DIRECTOR COMPUTER SCIENCE COMMITTEE, CHINESE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION "We do have a strong sense of urgency right now. But you cannot produce a massive amount of qualified people in a short time. So we have to respect natural rules in order to create an eco-system that allows this talent to emerge."
As the supply of domestic talent remains insufficient, projects like the Huawei ICT Competition can help the company find and cultivate those with proven skills or potential. And by providing free classes, software, training and devices, Huawei is winning the hearts of students everywhere.
ADEBAYO ABDULQUDUS TEAM NIGERIA "Huawei gave us everything we need. Every material we need is online. Huawei gave us everything at once. Huawei didn't set a barricade."
ROBERT GUTIERREZ TEAM PERU "I wish Huawei could give me an offer after the competition. I want to develop my career in Huawei."
At this year's competition, over 100 thousand college students from 61 countries participated in all stages. And for many of these countries, Huawei is providing an opportunity for IT education to go beyond borders.
ALFRED K. CHERUIYOT PRINCIPAL SECRETARY, KENYAN MINISTRY OF EDUCATION "Lots of our students are keen to learn ICT, information communication technology. We expect more cooperation with Huawei."
GE YUNFEI DONGGUAN "Students from five continents are gathering here because of their love for new technology and their pursuit to gain greater knowledge. And by simply being here, they may be the catalysts in proving that the evolution of technology relies on both communication and the breaking down of barriers – NOT building walls. Ge Yunfei, CGTN."
