During this year's Two Sessions, President Xi Jinping called on political advisers working in the field of culture and social sciences to listen to the voice of the TIMES and put PEOPLE at the center of their work. Delegates and deputies say they are deeply inspired by the comments. NPC deputy Zhao Jiping, a renowned composer, talks about his feelings.
ZHAO JIPING, CHAIRMAN CHINESE MUSICIANS' ASSOCIATION "President Xi called on us to boost cultural confidence and create good works for the people. It deeply touched me. We should bear that in mind at all times. Look at the works of the European and Russian masters. Everyone wrote good works for their own people such as Debussy and Beethoven, their classic works were created from folk music."
A symphony concert was held before this year's Two Sessions to mark the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening up with a newly created Feng Ya Song Symphony by Zhao Jiping. It was inspired by the ancient Book of Songs.
The lasting impression of Zhao's music mostly comes from the intense and rich ethnic elements. He is often regarded as an important contemporary representative of Chinese folk music.
ZHAO JIPING, CHAIRMAN CHINESE MUSICIANS' ASSOCIATION "I was thinking about the structure last year and later we discussed it with the Chinese Musicians' Association. The theme and name was confirmed after that. When the symphony orchestra performed, I told them to understand the spirit and dissolve that into the performance."
In 1984, Zhao Jiping was the composer for the Chinese classic Yellow Earth, his first time working on a movie. Together with director Chen Kaige and cinematographer Zhang Yimou, they lived on the Loess Plateau for a month, finally creating the theme song. The cooperation continued and in 1987 he composed the music for Red Sorghum, another classic of Chinese movie history.
ZHAO JIPING, CHAIRMAN CHINESE MUSICIANS' ASSOCIATION "It's a very northern style. After we had finished the music, we played it with the movie. I remembered it very clearly. Yimou, Gu Changwei and I, the whole movie, we were speechless and our hands were shaking. The impulse knocked us over."
Zhao Jiping believes music is a crucial way to present the soul of a movie. He insists on promoting and letting the world know more about Chinese music. He also cares about young musicians and hopes they draw on both traditional Chinese musical forms while reflecting a love of the nation in their work. He also promotes the protection of production rights for both Chinese and foreign music. Seventy-five-year-old Zhao Jiping sticks to hand-written notation composing music for three hours everyday. He is currently working on a new project to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
