South Africa's National football team is warming up for the upcoming 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifiers. And the squad known as Bafana will get ready by playing in Southern Africa's four-Nation tournament to help sharpen their skills. CGTN's Sias du Plessis has more.
The last time South Africa's national team was in action was in November last year where the team failed to beat a quality Senegal team in Polokwane bringing to an end their 2018 World Cup hopes, 4 months on and Bafana are back in action in a tournament that Stuart Baxter has identified as the perfect opportunity to freshen things up.
STUART BAXTER SOUTH AFRICA COACH "I want to see everybody, I want to give everybody a chance, maybe some of the very younger ones will come in for 30 minutes one game and 15 minutes in the second, but I would prefer to see everybody and therefore we are trying to work out beforehand who we would see play against Angola and who would suit playing against either Zimbabwe or Zambia."
The 2010 World Cup hosts are lacking in confidence and have found the going tough of late, prompting the players to do some soul searching ahead of the upcoming international fixtures.
RAMAHLWE MPHAHLELE SOUTH AFRICA DEFENDER "We will do our best to try and get the team that is going to compete to win the game, not just to go and say we compete we need to win the game we need to get our confidence back that's the most important thing."
The players have come under fire from football fans for being prima donnas when donning the Bafana jersey and Baxter is eager to change that public perception this year.
STUART BAXTER SOUTH AFRICA COACH "We want them to come in as good leaders who will impart their experiences to the other players we want to see younger players who are mentally strong who look at being in the national team as being a challenge and an honour not as a reward and a pat on the back."
Baxter faces a conundrum ahead of this trip, he's eager to use the two matches to blood and integrate new talent, but by playing the youngsters, he might not field the strongest side capable of winning both games, so it is a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't, in what is Bafana's last real opportunity to experiment and adopt a fresh approach ahead of their AFCON qualifiers later this year, Sias du Plessis, CGTN, Soweto.
