CGTN's China 24 program invited Dr. Eric Ding, epidemiologist and health economist from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health to discuss the on-going "toilet revolution".
Evaluating the campaign, Dr. Ding said that the toilet revolution has already brought on amazing results. And it's not just about making toilets more comfortable and clean.
He said the toilet revolution helps in disease control. Especially in the cases of diarrhea and tuberculosis, improvement in sanitation has brought down the chances of such diseases' outbreak by a very wide margin.
That said, Dr. Ding argues that there is still more to be done in the toilet revolution. It requires concerted efforts from many governmental departments and needs to address not only technology implementation, but also social acceptance, economic affordability, maintenance issues and, increasingly, gender considerations.
