Loud explosions were reportedly heard in Damascus in the early hours of Monday as Israel launched an operation against Iranian targets inside Syria.
"We have started striking Iranian Quds targets in Syrian territory. We warn the Syrian Armed Forces against attempting to harm Israeli forces or territory," the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement on Twitter.
The Quds Force are a unit of Iran's Revolutionary Guards in charge of overseas operations.
Syria's state news agency SANA said that the country's air defenses intercepted "hostile missiles" and destroyed most of them before reaching their targets.
The development comes a day after cross-border attacks on Sunday during which Syria foiled an Israeli "air aggression" while Israel brought down a rocket fired at the occupied Golan Heights.
