NBA's Detroit Pistons is interested in hiring Becky Hammon, an assistant coach of the San Antonio Spurs since 2014, as the team's head coach, according to The Detroit News on Friday.
"She's interesting, qualified. She can be a good head coach with her abilities, just like a few other assistant coaches in the league," said an anonymous NBA head coach.
41-year old Hammon joined the Spurs in 2014 as the first NBA female assistant coach. In 2015, she led the team to win champion of the NBA Summer League. When team's Head Coach Gregg Popovich was selected to lead the Western All-Star team during the 2016 NBA All-Star Game, Hammon joined Pop and became the first woman in NBA ALL-Star coaching staff. She was enshrined into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame on January 27.

"If you don't want a female coach, don’t hire one! If you want to hire somebody who’s qualified and will do a good job, then maybe you should consider me," said Hammon in an interview with Louisa Thomas from the New Yorker in April.
"It's going to take somebody who has some guts, some imagination, and is not driven by old standards and old forms. If somebody is smart, it's actually a pretty good marketing deal-but it's not about that. It's got to be that she's competent, that she's ready," said Popovich to the New Yorker on April 16.
"Big fan of Becky since she was in college. Very bright basketball mind," said NBA legendary player Kobe Bryant when the Spurs hired her as the assistant coach in 2014.

The Pistons fired Stan Van Gundy after the 2017-18 NBA regular season. Though the team only won 39 games and failed to enter the playoffs, the job of head coach is still attractive enough considering all-star players Andre Drummond and Blake Griffin are playing for the Motor City with a good point guard Reggie Jackson. Detroit has the chance to fight for playoffs in the new season.
