China firmly opposes of any form of official exchanges and contact between the United States and Taiwan, Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said on Wednesday's press conference as the Trump administration has put itself into another political swirl of condemnation.
The remarks came after the opening of a new office complex of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Tuesday morning, attended by US Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Culture Affairs Marie Royce.
Washington says the unveiling of the site is a symbol of strength of the partnership with Taiwan.
"The US side should abide by the One-China Principle and regulation of the China-US three Joint Communiqués so as to avoid damaging bilateral ties and maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," said Ma.
The communiqués, signed in the 1970s and 1980s, clearly states that “there is but one China and Taiwan is a part of China.”
On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry voiced opposition toward the move, urging the US to correct its wrong practice and honor its pledge made to China on the Taiwan issue.
It not the first time the Trump administration crossed the red line and challenged the One-China Principle.
China has repeatedly said that the One-China Principle is a prerequisite and the political foundation for friendly cooperation between China and the international community.
China is gaining more friends throughout the international community. In May, both the Dominican Republic and Burkina Faso, cut ties with Taiwan, and established and resumed ambassadorial level relations with Beijing.
