World famous American clothing and accessories retailer, Gap Inc. apologized on Monday evening for selling a T-shirt with the wrong map of China on it.
The incorrect map omitted Chinese territories including south Tibet, Chinese Kashmir, the island of Taiwan and the South China Sea. Gap apologized in Chinese on their official Weibo account and stated that the T-shirt is not currently sold in China. The picture of the T-shirt that is being circulated on Chinese social media was taken from an outlet in Canada.

The statement that Gap published on Weibo said, “Gap Inc. respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China. We’ve learned that a Gap brand T-shirt sold in some overseas markets failed to reflect the correct map of China. We sincerely apologize for this unintentional error.”
Gap announced that they are recalling the T-shirt from their stores, have withdrawn the T-shirt from release in the Chinese market and destroyed all of them.
Gap expressed that they will abide to Chinese laws and regulations. In the future, they will work harder on product review to prevent similar mistakes happening again.
Gap Inc. is not only one to get Chinese territories wrong. Other American companies which have issued apologies for similar incidents include Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) and Marriott International Inc. (MAR.O), Reuters reported.
