Paris Jackson, daughter of late US “King of Pop” Michael Jackson, apologized on Monday for appearing on a magazine cover in Singapore.
The 20-year-old actress and model, who confirmed to her fans that she is bisexual, appeared on the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar in Singapore, a country where homosexuality is considered illegal and could face up to two years in prison.
She was faced with tons of protest from the LGBTQ community for the cover. In an op-ed of a news website focusing on the LGBTQ community, an entertainment editor called her decision “disappointing” and “hypocritical”.
Paris Jackson hit back at the editor on her Twitter account, saying that she doesn’t “want to be hypocritical or hurt anybody”. She said that she had been grateful for the opportunity to appear on the cover, but had no idea of the country’s law.
She also emphasized that her support of the community comes first before her love for fashion, and has deleted the post of the magazine cover with her photo on it from her social media account, adding that the cover was not just intended for Singapore, but for several different countries such as Brazil and Spain.
On the other hand, many of her fans supported her on Twitter, with Wilson Philips singer Carnie Wilson included.
“I’m part of the LGBTQ community and I don’t understand the problem,” one of Jackson’s supporters said in the comment.
