Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday sent a message of condolences to U.S. President Donald Trump over the passing away of
former U.S. President George H.W. Bush.
On behalf of the Chinese government and people and in his own name, Xi voiced deep condolences over Bush's death and sincere sympathy for the former president's family.
As an old friend of China, Bush has witnessed and promoted the historic development of Sino-U.S. relations for over 40 years and made positive contributions to the friendship between the two peoples, Xi noted.
"The Chinese people will not forget this," the Chinese president said.
The 41st president of the United States died Friday at the age of 94, according to a statement from his office.
Bush was elected U.S. president in 1988 as the successor to Ronald Reagan. He served as head of the U.S. Liaison Office in China from 1974 to 1975.
