Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday called on medical workers to carry forward the humanitarian spirit to save lives, and make further contributions to promoting people's health.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, gave the instruction ahead of China's first Medical Workers' Day, which falls on Sunday.
The president expressed his appreciation and thanks to the service and dedication of medical workers across the country in protecting the people's health.
Xi said more efforts should be dedicated to improving people's health and building a healthy China.
The Medical Workers' Day, to be observed on Aug. 19, was approved by the State Council last year to mark the significance of doctors and nurses in safeguarding people's health.
The move has shown the high value that the CPC Central Committee places on public health and its full recognition of the outstanding performance of medical workers, Xi noted.
The introduction of the day is also viewed as an effort to harmonize relations between medical workers and patients in China.
Xi called on CPC committees and governments at all levels and the whole society to respect and care for medical workers.
Chinese Vice Premier Sun Chunlan paid a visit to Beijing Haidian Hospital on Friday to convey Xi's instruction and greetings and had a meeting with medical workers there.
