German champions Bayern Munich have announced the signing of 17-year-old Canadian winger Alphonso Davies in a record transfer deal from a Major League Soccer (MLS) side.
After the conclusion of the MLS season, Davies will officially join the German first-team squad from the Vancouver Whitecaps on January 1, 2019, on a contract that could fetch up to around 22 million US dollars. It will run until 2023.
The Ghana-born teenager is the first player born in the 2000s to play in an MLS match. He scored three goals in 20 appearances for the Whitecaps this season. He also netted twice for Canada during the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the biennial international men’s soccer championship of the North, Central American and Caribbean (CONCACAF) region, becoming the youngest player to score at the Gold Cup and the first player born in the 2000s to score at a top-level international tournament.
“Alphonso Davies is a very big talent,” Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said.
“At the age of 17, he offers a lot of promise for the future. Alphonso already possesses great ability, which is why a lot of top clubs were keen on him. I’m delighted he’s chosen FC Bayern.”
