Exclusive with Axel Witsel: ‘We have the team to go as far as we can’

Belgium starts their World Cup campaign against Panama on Monday. CGTN Sports Scene’s host Mike Fox talked to midfielder Axel Witsel ahead of the tournament about being the only member from Chinese Super League club Tianjin Quanjian on the star-studded team, and also about their match against England on June 29.

Belgium is ranked No. 3 in the latest FIFA rankings and has appeared in 12 World Cups, reaching the quarterfinals in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Meanwhile, Panama is going to play in their first World Cup match. As a member of the biggest favorite in Group G, Witsel told CGTN his expectations going forward.

“I won’t say that it’s our last chance but everybody knows in the squad that it’s going to be very important,” Witsel said. “I think we have the team to go as far as we can. Our objective is to do better than in Brazil or in France in the European Championships. I think we have the team to do well.” 
Belgium will face England on June 29. Witsel said both team are strong and competitive; it might be a 50-50 match.
