Low birth rates are now becoming a trend across Asia. Besides for China and S. Korea, Japan's birthrate fell to 1.43 in 2018, its lowest rate ever. In Singapore, the total fertility rate has been gradually declining over the past few decades and it hit 1.14 last year. Even in India, a developing country with nearly a fifth of the world's population, the total fertility rate has shown a steady decline from 3.6 per woman in 1991 to only 2.3 in 2018.
