A group of militants including ISIL suicide bombers targeted the offices of the Libyan electoral commission in Tripoli on Wednesday, Reuters reported citing a spokesman.
The suicide bombers entered the offices and then set them on fire. The death toll of the attack has risen to 15. Confirming the deaths, Abdaddaem al-Rabti, an official of the public Tripoli Field Hospital, said that nine commission employees, four security personnel and two terrorists had died while 21 people were injured.
The attackers stormed the commission's building, clashed with the security forces and eventually blew themselves up after being surrounded by backup security, a Libyan interior ministry official said.
The UN-backed Libyan government declared three days' national mourning for the victims. The electoral commission has been registering voters ahead of new elections that the United Nations says it hopes can be held in Libya before the end of the year.
