Beijing's Palace Museum unveils virtual world

To mark the upcoming Chinese New Year, Beijing's Palace Museum organized a digital exhibition of the country's various festive rituals. Organizers said they hope it would give visitors something traditional through the modern-day technologies they have been familiar with.

The Palace of Heavenly Purity, or Qianqing Gong in Chinese, has opened its doors to visitors, leading them into a virtual world of various festive activities, fireworks, stage plays and even some fun with flying snowflakes.

"We use digital technology to present an exhibition of celebrating the Chinese New Year in the Qianqing Gong. Cultural relics about festival customs will also be on display via VR," said Shan Jixiang, director of the Palace Museum.

So whether it's virtual reality or interactive touchscreens, these cutting edge technologies can help visitors experience the Lunar New Year just as the Chinese emperors and nobles did many centuries ago.
