Japan's biggest content expo has just lowered its curtain in Tokyo. Content Expo featured seven specialized trade shows related to content, including virtual imaging, special effects design, content distribution and marketing.
The "virtual hostess" from the show has gone viral on the internet in Japan. She did live shows and interacted with netizens - even though "she" is actually created through techniques like motion capture and sound processing. The facial expressions and movements of a dubbing actress were captured by sensors and adopted by the animated figure, bringing "her" to life. The company came up with this virtual hostess three years ago and it has garnered 2.5 million fans to date.
"The value of virtual hosts and hostesses has doubled each of the past three years. The most popular ones received lots of offers to perform, every month. We hope these virtual hosts or hostesses can become a hot industry after Japan's cartoon and animated series," said Takeshi Osaka, CEO of Active8.
New media has been widely used in various products on display here. A company specializing in educational videos has created a series of videos, imitating guests raising various requests. The video series is used in training service personnel.
Some companies have combined virtual reality technology with dance performances, to give viewers an extravagant experience. The three-day event attracted nearly 55,000 people, a 10 percent increase from last year.
