Millions of Hindu pilgrims took the plunge into sacred rivers at the world's largest religious gathering in Prayagraj, northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. On the most auspicious day of the 49-day-long Kumbh Mela, devotees immersed themselves at the confluence of three holy rivers. Hindus believe that bathing there during the Kumbh helps cleanse sins and attain salvation. Around 140 million pilgrims are expected during the whole festival which ends on March 4.
