China refutes US allegations, stresses non-interference policy

China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference and expects other countries to do the same, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday in response to US allegations of China "attempting to interfere" in the 2018 US midterm elections.

US President Donald Trump at a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday had accused China of undermining his prospects in the upcoming mid-term elections.

Non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries is a tradition of China's foreign policy, which has been widely praised by the international community, Wang said at the Security Council meeting on maintaining international peace and security.

"We did not, do not and will not interfere in the internal affairs of any country, and we don't accept any groundless accusations made against China," he said.

"We also urge other countries to follow the principles of the United Nations Charter, which forbids interference in any nation's internal affairs," he said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang also made similar remarks at the press conference Thursday, when he urged the US to stop making groundless accusations and slander against China.

Wang hails JCPoA as a hard-won multilateral achievement

Speaking of the Iran nuclear issue, Wang said that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) is a hard-won multilateral achievement and was unanimously approved by the UN Security Council.

"China encourages Iran to continue to fulfill the commitments it has made and the legitimate rights of all parties to conduct normal economic and trade cooperation with Iran should also be respected," Wang stressed.

China calls on all parties to proceed from the long-term and overall situation and maintain the seriousness, integrity and effectiveness of the JCPoA, Wang noted.

Wang calls on all parties to cherish the hard-won improvements on Korean Peninsula

Wang said that there has been a significant easing momentum on the Korean Peninsula, and China has made unremitting efforts to it.

He said we must cherish the current opportunities, turn the political commitments of all parties into practical actions, stick to the denuclearization of the Peninsula and strive for a peace mechanism.

Wang calls for efforts to improve international non-proliferation regime

Wang proposed that countries should abide by the rule of law to consolidate and improve the international non-proliferation regime.

"All of us should earnestly safeguard the universality, effectiveness, and authority of non-proliferation regime, and in particular prevent terrorists and other non-state actors from getting hold of weapons of mass destruction materials and technologies," said Wang.

The top Chinese diplomat said multi-front measures should be taken to implement the non-proliferation treaty in a balanced manner.

Wang called on countries to honor their words, shoulder their responsibilities and fulfill international obligations with no double standards, discriminatory arrangement or selective enforcement.
