What to expect at the 2019 Spring Festival Gala

Rehearsals have kicked into high gear for the annual Spring Festival Gala, China's most watched TV program, as the biggest celebration of the Chinese people is just around the corner. Some details for the event were unveiled on Friday.

It will be the first gala after the establishment of the China Media Group in March 2018, and the show's crew has promised to present a “grand Spring Festival Eve feast” for Chinese people around the globe.

This year's gala is expected to see more renovations in various types of programs, while the main genres and forms maintain its traditional styles.

More laughter expected

Programs featuring cross-talks and witty skits are some of the most beloved parts of the annual gala. According to the crew, they've invited some of the best playwrights, directors and actors from the comedy circle, aiming to bring more laughter to the audience this year.

The programs will be themed around some of the year's widely discussed topics, such as the nature of our daily communications and exchanges, fraud in the market, and satires of bureaucracy and formalism.

Tradition mingles with trends in singing and dancing segments

According to the gala's crew, the singing and dancing programs of this year's gala will see more bold creations.

A string of classical songs will be represented to the stage. 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the foundation of People's Republic of China, and a number of songs related to it will be heard again.

The younger generation can also look forward to their favorite pop music as well.

Traditional operas, such as the Peking Opera, Huangmei Opera and Shaoxing Opera, are always in indispensable part of the Spring Festival gala. Chinese traditional culture enthusiasts will be able to find a number of top artists and performers in the field as well.

Magic has become one of the most anticipated programs in recent years, and this year's magic is expected to wow audiences.

This year's Spring Festival Gala will be broadcast on TV and streamed online simultaneously. During the event, there will also be opportunities to engage via Tik Tok, also known as Douyin, one of the most popular mobile app for the Chinese youth, as well. 

The 2019 Spring Festival Gala will air on Spring Festival Eve, as usual, which falls on February 4 this year.
