Tongli Ancient Town: 'The Venice of the East'

Situated in the southeast of Suzhou City, about 50 minutes' drive from downtown Suzhou, Tongli Ancient Town is one of the most well-preserved water towns in China with a history of over 1,000 years. Be it the typical traditional architecture, bustling canal-side streets, beautiful water or friendly locals, the town is reputed as "the Venice of the East" and worth a visit.

When strolling around the town, you could soon be surrounded by an atmosphere of elegance and quietness. There are eight major streets in Tongli Ancient Town – some of them are partially hidden by trees and others are nestled by the river.
The town's 49 stone bridges in different styles, which join seven islands created by 15 rivers and five lakes, have made it a place full of unique charms.
In 2004, Tongli Ancient Town, together with Zhouzhuang and Luzhi, were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

What to see in the town

Tuisi Garden, also known as Retreat and Reflection Garden, is one of the popular spots in the town. Built by Ren Lansheng from 1885 to 1887 during the Qing Dynasty, the garden has two parts, namely the western section and the eastern section.
