The Gaoligong Mountain International Birding Festival kicked off last Saturday, attracting a large number of bird lovers overseas to Baoshan City, southwest China's Yunnan Province.
Straddling the border of southwestern China and northern Myanmar, the Gaoligong Mountain National Nature Reserve is noted as a "gene pool of species,” which has a phenomenal biodiversity. There are 525 species of birds living inside the mountain, accounting for 37.5 percent of China's total bird species.

The nature reserve was established in 1992 and is a level-A protected area by the World Wildlife Fund. It's unique in that the climatic condition in the region allows a complete transition from temperate to tropical forest, which is rarely seen elsewhere on Earth.
It is estimated that there are 47 bird observatories and 64 bird guides at the Baihua Ridge of the Gaoligong Mountain. Bird photographers can see endangered bird species such as Sclater's monal, golden eagle, cinereous vulture, Mrs. Hume's pheasant, and silver pheasant there.
