Traditional dance group lights up Bolivia carnival

CGTN

Dancers in angel and demon costumes from the "Authentic Traditional Diablada" troupe captivated crowds during a three-hour pilgrimage in the city of Oruro in Bolivia on Saturday morning.

They were taking part in La Diablada, or the Devil's Carnival, along with over 50 other dancing groups to pay homage to the patron of Oruro, the Virgin del Socavon.

The group's dance is the centerpiece of the Oruro carnival, which combines elements of the indigenous religious ceremony with Spanish carnival and Catholic beliefs. The event's cultural importance has even brought it official recognition by UNESCO.

After three hours of dancing and marching in the heat, the Authentic Traditional Diablada dancers reached their destination – a church – where they gave thanks to their patron for protecting them.

The 2019 La Diablada ran from Friday to Monday.
