13 killed as powerful typhoon Mangkhut slams into the Philippines

At least 13 people were killed and five others went missing as super typhoon Mangkhut tore through the northern Philippines on Saturday, according to disaster officials.

Two rescue workers died in a landslide in the Cordillera Administrative Region of Luzon Island and another body was found in a river in Manila, according to the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Mangkhut, which made landfall at 1:40 a.m. local time on Saturday in the northern Philippines, is expected to exit the country on Saturday afternoon or night and move towards southern China and Vietnam.

The strong typhoon is expected to make landfall in Guangdong Province between Sunday afternoon and evening, according to China's National Meteorological Center.

The provincial maritime administration has dispatched helicopters and tugboats to transfer 3,238 offshore platform workers and ordered 6,266 ships to take precautions against the typhoon.

Hainan Province also ordered the closure of all tourist sites on Sunday and Monday and the suspension of school classes depending on weather conditions.

More than 50,000 fishermen and nearly 11,000 fishing boats have been called back to port in southeast China's Fujian Province.
