The latest Golden Globes nominations have just been announced and industry insiders are already expressing surprise that Adam McKay's "Vice" is leading the way.
With six nominations, "Vice" narrowly edged Bradley Cooper's tear-jerking revival "A Star Is Born", the interracial road-trip drama "Green Book" and the period romp "The Favourite".
"I was surprised that 'Vice' is the movie that got the most nominations. I think everyone expected 'A Star Is Born' would be leading with nominations," said Marc Malkin, senior events and lifestyles editor of Variety. "I was a little surprised because people just sort of started seeing it. A lot of people hadn't even seen 'Vice.'"

"'Vice' is a very political movie; it's a very American movie: we're talking about George Bush and Dick Cheney," he said. "So I was a little surprised to see the Hollywood Foreign Press go there, but it is Christian Bale. They love Christian Bale." "Vice" is nominated for Best Motion Picture.
The biopic also earned nominations for supporting roles and both the screenplay and direction by McKay, the veteran comedy filmmaker.
"Sometimes for the Golden Globe nominations, we see a film that gets 10, 11 nominations, maybe nine or eight. This year, the top vote getter is 'Vice' which was a surprise and it only got six nominations. Eighteen films have one nomination, so I think more than any time before that I can remember, the Golden Globe voters have really spread the wealth," said KABC entertainment reporter George Pennacchio,
But it was far from a runaway win for "Vice", as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association typically spreads its awards around.

Oscar front-runners "A Star Is Born," ''Green Book" and "The Favorite" trailed close behind with five nominations each.
Industry experts tended to think judges are becoming more inclusive....
"I'm so excited for Regina King getting two nominations, I'm thrilled for John David Washington for 'BlacKkKlansman' and Spike Lee, and oh my God, 'Beale Street.' I'm... Barry Jenkins – like those are those are, those are my headlines and also Billy Porter for 'Pose' – I'm really, really thrilled for him," said Essence editor Regina Robertson.
It is widely expected that the nominations will boost TV ratings for the Golden Globes.
Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg will host the 2019 ceremony on January 6.
