China continues to bask in the glow of winning both the open and women sections at the recent Chess Olympiad in Georgia. After returning home with the two trophies, China Chess Association vice president and national team coach Ye Jiangchuan sat down with CGTN's Sports Scene to reflect on the meaning of this accomplishment.
The 57-year-old has represented his country at numerous Chess Olympiads in the past, and now as the winning squad coach, Ye mentioned, "This victory holds major significance, this time we claimed both titles at the Chess Olympiad, a feat which had only been achieved once, when the Soviet Union did that in Dubai 32 years ago. This achievement by Chinese team indicates that our level of play has improved significantly."
China first attended Chess Olympiad in 1978, winning their first women's gold in 1998, and making total of six champions in the women's section. China won their first Open section gold in 2014, breaking the title monopoly of the tournament by teams from Europe and US.
