Cuban businessman offers free equestrian therapy in Havana

By Chuck Tinte and Luis Chirino

Equestrian therapy was developed in Cuba for nearly 20 years now. It's a form of therapy that makes use of horses to help promote emotional growth. It's also been shown to benefit people with a variety of conditions, from attention deficit disorder and autism – to brain injuries and physical paralysis.

Equestrian therapy, however, can be quite expensive. One session can cost at least 75 U.S.dollars, and even more depending on the intensity of the program.

But equestrian therapist and horse trainer Paulino Garcia won't take even a single dime for it.

He's a restaurant owner in Havana. And for some 16 years now, he's used his business profits to fund his own equestrian therapy program. He takes pleasure in helping his community, especially the children in need.

"It's incredible to see how the first thing that improves is the child's behavior as they socialize better, this is really nice work with good results and we are happy with it," Paulino said.

Gretel Gonzalez and her kid, who has been suffering from brain paralysis, are just one of the many families who've benefited from Paulino's generosity.

"They are really committed and give affection to all children coming here and they are helping all these challenged kids so that they advance and go ahead with their lives," she said.

Many other parents express similar gratitude for the program and its contribution to the community – made possible by a successful businessman – with a generous spirit and kind heart.
