Liu Qitang, like many people, sneaked from Shenzhen, the once rural village in China’s southern Guangdong Province to Hong Kong back in the 1970s. Liu came back once he realized that changes were taking place at home thanks to China's reform and opening-up policy. Shenzhen has transformed into one of the country's most modern cities over the past 40 years, in part due to its exclusive economic zone.
