Chinese President Xi Jinping told his Gambian counterpart Adama Barrow on Thursday that Beijing appreciates Barrow and the Gambian government's adherence to the one-China policy.
Xi made the remarks at a meeting with Barrow after the 2018 Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which was held on Monday and Tuesday.
Xi welcomed the Gambian president on his first attendance at a FOCAC meeting, adding that friendly cooperation between the two countries has been progressing smoothly since they resumed diplomatic ties more than two years ago.
China is willing to keep enhancing political trust with Gambia, Xi said, calling on the two sides to firmly support each other on issues involving their respective core interests and major concerns.
China supports the Gambian government's initiative to "Build a New Gambia" and supports the country's efforts to enhance its capacities in maintaining peace and security.
Barrow said almost all African heads of state and heads of government had gathered in Beijing for the summit, which showed that Africa highly values China and Africa-China relations.
Gambia is very happy to be back to the family of China-Africa cooperation, he stressed, noting that his country is satisfied with what has been achieved in bilateral cooperation since the resumption of diplomatic ties.
With China's help, Gambia's telecommunication, roads and traffic conditions have improved, Barrow added.
It has been proved that maintaining the so-called "diplomatic relations" with Taiwan in the past was a huge mistake of Gambia, he said, stressing that his country will unwaveringly adhere to the one-China policy.
Barrow said he believes that cooperation with China will boost the development of Gambia.
The two leaders also witnessed the signing of cooperation documents after their talks.
