Legends surrounding Braies Lake in the Italian Alps say that it was made by miners who dug for gold and precious stones in the mountains. /VCG Photo
The miners opened a natural spring in the mountains and flooded Prags Valley in the South Tyrol province in northern Italy, creating the lake as a place to hide their treasure from local herdsmen. /VCG Photo
At over 36 meters deep in places, and spanning 0.31 square kilometers, the lake is one of the largest in the Dolomite mountains. /VCG Photo
