China successfully launched the HY-1C satellite from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in China's northern Shanxi Province on Friday, marking the third mission of the "HY-1" series and the first satellite for civil marine purposes.
The satellite, carried by a Long-March -2C rocket, was sent into space at 11:15 a.m. BJT from the launch center.
HY-1C, developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, is designed to expand the global coverage of the current marine remote-sensing satellites, providing data to environmental monitoring agencies, as well as the meteorological and agricultural industries, in an attempt to establish early warning systems and prevent potential disaster.
It is expected that the HY-2B marine satellite will also be sent into space by the end of this year.
