Since they met in the playoffs last season, the Thunder and the Jazz are familiar foes. Utah is known to seek open shots via extra passes on offense and set up a Rudy Gobert no-fly zone in the paint on defense. The Thunder excel at forcing turnovers and scoring in transition.
OKC began the game double-teaming the ball handler in pick-and-roll situations, which allowed them to lead in both steals and forced turnovers forced turnovers. However, thanks to the remarkable efficiency of Mitchell, who was perfect from the field and scored 14 points, Utah trailed only 34-35 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, OKC changed defensive tactics by posting Steven Adams in the paint to deter easy buckets. Though the team had fewer steals (2-4) in this quarter, they managed to make it more difficult to score for the Jazz, who struggled to knock down shots from beyond the arc.
The turning point came in the third quarter as Utah began to shoot better from the three-point line (6-2). Meanwhile, OKC's backup players fell into a scoring drought, with Dennis Schroder being the only scorer (7 points). By contrast, the Jazz received 22 points from their bench squad and 14 by Jae Crowder. After outscoring OKC 38-27 in Q3, Utah managed to turn the tide by leading 95-93.

The Jazz had multiple opportunities to kill the game in the fourth quarter. First, they expanded the lead to 107-97 via consecutive points by Crowder and Raul Neto, but Westbrook and George narrowed the difference down to one point (109-108) by making three three-pointers in a row. Then Favors and Joe Ingles expanded Utah's lead again to seven points (124-117) before Westbrook tied the score (126-126) by making two free throws. After Rubio and Grant exchanged three points in the last 30 seconds, the game entered overtime.
In the first OT, neither Utah nor OKC could leave the other side behind. After Mitchell gained the lead for the Jazz 137-136 with a layup, Westbrook fouled out, leaving George to carry their team. As Abdel Nader and Gobert again tied the game 139-139, both George and Mitchell missed a shot to win the game.
The second OT remained a stalemate. After several rounds of lead changes, Gobert made two free throws to help the Jazz lead 147-146. In the following 70 seconds, both sides missed in total four shots before George went through a double-team to make a floater under the defense of 7-foot-1 Gobert to claim victory for OKC.
