IAEA chief: Iran complying with nuclear deal despite U.S. pullout

Iran has been implementing its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known as the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, despite Washington's withdrawal from the agreement last May, said Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

"It is essential that Iran continues to fully implement those commitments,” Amano said when addressing IAEA's board of governors in Vienna on Monday.

He added that evaluations regarding the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran will continue.

Will the U.S.' exit wreck the Iran nuclear deal?

The JCPOA was signed in 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 – Russia, France, China, Britain, the United States, plus Germany.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Washington's withdrawal from the landmark deal in May 2018, saying it had failed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons or supporting terrorism in the region.

Since then, the Trump administration has slapped a number of sanctions on Iran.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has reassured his country's intention to stick to the deal.
