The 18th Asian Games, currently underway in Jakarta and Palembang, is already beginning to bring massive economic benefits to Indonesia.
It is the first time in history that two cities are hosting the games. Both Jakarta and the South Sumatran capital of Palembang are hosting nearly 10,000 athletes, delegates and personnel in addition to more than 3,500 media representatives from around the world.
The country has been preparing for this event for years. President Joko Widodo’s administration heavily prioritized infrastructure developments in both cities to make sure visitors to the country feel comfortable and safe.
According to the Indonesian government, the total direct economic impact of the games will be nearly 3.2 billion US dollars. Many of the facilities that have been built for the purpose of the games will be here to stay long after the Asian Games are over.

The LRT transportation system in Palembang is set to help ease athletes getting around the city. But experts say it will begin to attract tourism in the future. More international tourists will want to visit Indonesia as quality of infrastructure also improves.
“If this event is successful we hope it will have an impact to the long term investment in Indonesia because hosting the Asian Games or any kind of Olympics, it means we are showcasing this to the world, to other investors. If we succeed in this one, it means the investor will come to Indonesia and this will create more credibility to the Indonesian government.” said economist Bhima Yudhistira.
Jakarta’s local economies are already feeling the immediate growth as well. Plenty of opportunities are opening up for Aswin Said, a food vendor in Jakarta. He has set up his booth just outside the main stadium of the Asian Games. He has been selling Jakarta’s favorite street food for years, Soto Ayam, a tasty bowl of chicken noodle soup.
“This event has allowed me to introduce my business to the international market. People from all over the world are able to enjoy Indonesian delicacies. This event is ongoing for the next few weeks and it will be a good opportunity for me to make good income.” said Aswin.
The Asian Games have put Indonesia further into the global spotlight by bringing in foreign investments and international tourists. It has also helped to mark the beginning of Indonesia’s success in hosting large scale events.
