NBA highlights on Nov. 17: Butler ruins Walker's 60-point night

Li Xiang

Saturday saw 10 NBA games. Kemba Walker of the Charlotte Hornets put down a record-high 60 points at home, but he had to share the night with Jimmy Butler who gave the visiting Philadelphia 76ers (122-119) a win, with his game-winning three-pointer in overtime.

Walker had one of the best performances of his career, making 21 out of 33 attempts, scoring a total of 60 points at the Spectrum Center. He dropped 23 points in the first half to keep the Hornets from trailing too far behind (56-63) and continued his scoring momentum in the third quarter with 16 points to help Charlotte gain the lead (86-82).

Even Iron Man needs a break and so did Walker. However, while he was on the bench in the fourth quarter, the 76ers found their way back to tie the score at 89-89. Then thanks to Mike Muscala's three-pointer and Jimmy Butler's free throws, Philadelphia again led by 10 points. At this point, Walker came back to help the Hornets catch up. His 19 points in the fourth quarter dragged the game into overtime (110-110).

Walker carried on his heroic performance in overtime by making a key perimeter shot which together with 2+1 by Jeremy Lamb tied the score at 119-119 for Charlotte, with only 34 seconds left. With 60 points on the table, Walker could have taken down the victory with another jumper if not for Jimmy Butler.

Fairly speaking, Butler did not play efficiently in the game as he only made four shots out of 11 attempts to put down 15 points. However, the four-time All-Star player proved his value in the last 15 seconds. First his defense against Walker helped block a game-winning shot.  After the team's last timeout, Butler made his only three-pointer of the game, which was good enough for Philadelphia to take the win.

How rare is a 60-point game in NBA?

Walker joined some of the greatest scorers in NBA history with his 60 points on Saturday. Though the league isn't lacking in super stars, scoring more than 60 in one game is still a magnificent accomplishment.

In the 21st century, before Walker, there were in total 10 players who scored over (including) 60 points: Shaquille O'Neal, Tracy McGrady, Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, Gilbert Arenas, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Klay Thompson, Devin Booker and James Harden.

Bryant accounted for both the highest and the most number of 60+ games. On January 22, 2006, the Black Mamba scored NBA's second highest 81 points to help the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Toronto Raptors 122-104. Earlier that season on December 20, 2005, he also put down 62 points in three quarters against the Dallas Mavericks which, by the way, only scored 61 points as a team.

Then in the 2006-07 season, Bryant dropped a couple more 60+ games. First he scored 65 points in March 2007 to help the Lakers beat the Portland Trail Blazers 116-111, conquering the Rose Garden Arena (renamed Moda Center after 2013). Six days later, Bryant again put down 60 points to help the Lakers defeat the Memphis Grizzlies 121-119. Both games were part of his four consecutive 50+ games streak.

Bryant's fifth 60+ point game happened on February 2, 2009 when he scored 61 points not only to claim the victory for the Lakers (126-117) over the New York Knicks, but also to receive "MVP" cheers at Madison Square Garden. Then on April 13, 2016, in the last game in his career against the Utah Jazz, 37-year-old Black Mamba dropped 60 points.

Each of the rest nine players had one 60+ game. Devin Booker from the Phoenix Suns had the second highest score (70) at the youngest age (20). However, he was aided by his teammates who committed fouls to allow Booker to continue scoring.

Klay Thompson #11 scores 60 points in less than 30 minutes, December 5, 2016, to help the Golden State Warriors sweep the Indiana Pacers 142-106. /VCG Photo

Klay Thompson's record deserves attention because he's the only one who scored 60 in less than 30 minutes. On December 5, 2016, Thompson made 21 shots out of 33 attempts including 8/14 for three-point range to help the Golden State Warriors beat the Indiana Pacers 142-106 at home.

James Harden should also be proud of his performance on January 30 because he took NBA's first 60-point triple double of 60 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists as the Houston Rockets defeated the Orlando Magic 114-107. Gilbert Arenas had an interesting story to tell because he got his 60 points in front of Kobe Bryant on December 17, 2006 when the Washington Wizards defeated the Lakers 147-141 in overtime.

As for the other five players: Tracy McGrady scored 62 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to help the Magic defeat the Wizards 108-99 on March 10, 2004. Carmelo Anthony put down 62 points and 13 rebounds as the Knicks defeated the Charlotte Bobcats (today's Hornets) 125-96 on January 24, 2014. Shaquille O'Neal dropped 61 points and 23 rebounds on his birthday night on March 6, 2000 to help the Lakers sweep the Los Angeles Clippers. Allen Iverson scored 60 points on February 12, 2005 when the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Magic. LeBron James put down 61 points on March 3, 2014 to help the Miami Heat beat the Bobcats 124-107.
