The first session of China-Britain Rowing Elite program, which aimed to select qualified players from China, recently concluded at the China National Water Training Base of Qiandao Lake, near Chun'an County in Hangzhou, capital of eastern Zhejiang Province.
The program was jointly launched by the Chinese Rowing Association and Oxford Brooks University in the UK.
Experts from both countries presided over the session, during which candidates went through three tests in terms of academic study, physical competence and professional expertise.
As the test results indicate, five percent of participants have achieved a distinguished level with their scores above 90 points in disciplines of Chinese, mathematics and English.
The average height is 1.8 meters among female players and 1.9 meters among males. And a majority of them have longer arm lengths than their heights, implying their ideal physique as rowing athletes.
According to a Chinese expert, the program has included players who have been engaged rowing training over a year, and some are seeds from the national youth team.
The expert also encouraged more basketball or volleyball youth players to take part in the rowing training, as he pointed out that one-third of worldwide top rowing athletes start training at 18 as freshmen in college.
About one-third of candidates have huge potential in rowing and will be likely to join in the Brooks program, said a British expert.
The next session will start in April, and the registration is still available.
