Chinese Foreign Ministry on Wednesday denied the existence of economic pre-conditions in
establishing diplomatic relations between China and the Dominican Republic, adding normalizing ties is in line with the fundamental interests of the two peoples.
No "coercion or trade" was involved, Hua Chunying, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said during a daily press briefing, adding that the decision was "right and proper, and fair and above board".
Hua reiterated the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the country, adding that there is only one premise for China to establish relations with the Dominican Republic – to recognize and abide by the One-China Principle.
The Dominican Republic has reaffirmed its position in the joint communique and in various occasions, Hua noted, saying the move has further verified that adhering to the One-China Principle is the general consensus of the international community.
We believe that the establishment of diplomatic ties will open up broad prospects for cooperation in all fields between the two countries, Hua said.
