'Doraemon the movie' becomes massive hit in China

“Doraemon the Movie: Nobita's Treasure Island” soared to 12.6 million US dollars in China during the Children Day, showed the data released by Mtime – an online database of movies and TV shows in China.

Unlike other animations, the post-80s and 90s generations contributed a lot to the box office hit of Doraemon the movie. Many of them even said that they would go to see the movie, no matter if it was good or bad, since the robot cat is one of the most beloved cartoon characters for them, and is considered as a childhood accompany, who has countless magical stuffs in his pocket.

The movie has garnered pretty positive reviews, and holds a solid seven grades out of ten on Douban. (A Rotten Tomatoes like Chinese website.) A fan who gives the film 8 grades claimed: “The grades were not because I am a fan of Doraemon, but because it really deserves.”

“Doraemon the Movie: Nobita's Treasure Island” tells a story of five friends who find a treasure map of pirates and decide to go treasure hunting. The plot contains many familiar details which recall memory, for example, Shizuka taking showers and Doraemon having a hard time finding the right tools in his pocket.

"It's like summer break when I was a child, when I saw these plots," said one fan.

The theme song by Gen Hoshino was very successful, according to the feedback from many fans. The practical singer-songwriter has great influence in Japan, especially among high school students. This time, because of the great performances in the movie, Hoshino has gained a lot of fans in China.

“The timing of the music is perfect, and it so touching, it is one of my favorite parts of the film,” commented a fan on Douban.
