Among the 32 teams competing in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, coach of the German team Joachim Loew earns the highest annual salary at 3.31 million pounds, according to an inventory done by the UK's Daily Mirror.
However, that number pales in comparison to how much Marcello Lippi, head coach of the Chinese men's football team, earns a year. As a matter of fact, Lippi's annual salary of more than 20 million pounds is more than the sum of eight of his colleagues.
Germany, Brazil, Argentina, France, Spain, Portugal, England and Belgium are seen as eight of the strongest contenders to win the World Cup trophy this year, though their coaches' salaries aren't anywhere near the amount Lippi makes.

Rankings of the eight coaches' annual salaries are as follows:
1. 3.31 million pounds for Germany's Joachim Loew
2. 3.02 million pounds for Brazil's Tite and Didier Deschamps of France
3. 2.58 million pounds for Spain's Julen Lopetegui
4. 1.91 million pounds for Fernando Santos of Portugal
5. 1.69 million pounds for UK's Gareth Southgate
6. 1.5 million pounds for Argentina's Jorge Sampaoli
7. 0.81 million pounds for Roberto Martínez Gutierrez of Belgium

By contrast, China, whose men's football team has failed to enter the 2018 World Cup, is paying its coach about 23 million euros, which equals some 20.14 million pounds a year. This number has put Lippi second in the ranking of annual salaries for the world's football coaches, according to France Football.
Moreover, the total sum of the eight coaches above is about 18 million pounds, less than Lippi's. China Football Association (CFA) has not offered Lippi a new contract, probably because the enormous figure has not been matched by the football team's performance.
