Lamu Old Town is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in Kenya. The ancient town was built in the 14th century, and was added to the World Heritage List in 2001. The local architecture is characterized by its simplicity, with coral stone and mangrove timber as the main building materials. Early Chinese mariners were in contact with Kenya through the ancient Maritime Silk Road.
