Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has unveiled a "state-of-the-art" domestically produced submarine with the capability of firing cruise missiles, Al Jazeera reported on Sunday.
The inauguration ceremony took place in the southern port city of Bandar Lengeh.
"It weighs 600 tonnes and enjoys state-of-the-art weaponry, including torpedoes, naval mines and cruise missiles that could be launched from a submerged position," reported the government's English-language Press TV.
Tasnim news agency said that the Fateh is outfitted with a guided-missile system capable of launching submarine-launched cruise missiles and an advanced sonic radar system that can identify enemy vessels.
Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami was quoted on Saturday as saying "the Fateh is entirely a homegrown submarine that is designed and developed by experts of the defense ministry and is equipped with the world's modern technologies."
"The advanced Fateh submarine will soon join the Islamic Republic of Iran's Navy after success in final tests," Hatami also said, according to the Times of Israel.
