Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday called on people to better study the May Fourth Movement and spirit, and urged the country's youth to make unremitting contributions to the national rejuvenation.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks at a group study session of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau as this year marks the 100th anniversary of the movement.

In his speech, Xi described the May Fourth Movement as an anti-imperialist and patriotic campaign growing out of student demonstrations and backed by Chinese people from all walks of life. He noted that the Party has taken a great interest in studying and interpreting the movement and its spirit.

President Xi urged people to strengthen their study of the movement and understand the essence of its spirit in order to motivate them to work hard and better contribute to the contemporary development of China.

Xi also stressed the importance of young people in achieving the Chinese dream and the great rejuvenation of the nation. He encouraged the younger generation to devote themselves to the cause of achieving the great rejuvenation of the nation, building socialism with Chinese characteristics and becoming the main force in the industries they are part of.

The May Fourth Movement and its spirit are a precious cultural heritage of the Chinese people, said Xi, urging governments at all levels to strengthen the collection, arrangement and protection of related relics in order to pass on the movement's spirit to later generations.
