The new board members of the Boao Forum for Asia have gathered in Beijing. The board of directors aim to strengthen regional economic integration as they look forward to the forum next year.
Boao should not be limited by its geographic boundaries, said Ban Ki-Moon, Chairman of Directors. Ban said the forum should focus on Asia with global perspectives.
Ban called for multilateral cooperation between board members and the Council of Advisers.
Zhou Xiaochuan, China's new chief representative at the forum, said China plays a significant role in the Asian community.
“If you ask me in the simplest possible ways, what is the know-how of China’s success, and more broadly the Asian miracle, the two things are economic reform and opening up,” Zhou said.
China has been committed to openness in trade. During his keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the forum this year, President Xi Jinping promised to further open up the country's economy, lower tariffs and promote global prosperity.
At a time of growing protectionist sentiment, Beijing rejects rhetoric referring to a "China threat”.
Chinese diplomat Li Baodong is appointed the secretary-general of the forum. He said the new board has much work to do as the world today is changing fast.
“The Boao Forum must lead the debate, and also come up with inspiring ideas, solutions and initiatives,” said Li.
Li said the new leadership will focus on the development of multiple areas including technology, healthcare, education and culture.
The new board members were announced in April during this year's Boao Forum for Asia. Twelve of the 19 members are newly elected.
Ban Ki-moon is the former secretary-general of the United Nations. Zhou Xiaochuan is the former governor of the People's Bank of China. And Li Baodong is China's vice minister of foreign affairs. This gives the new board of directors a vast combined experience in politics, diplomacy and economy. Now the Asian community is looking forward to their advice on tackling world issues and promoting cooperation.
