Although the competition was close, the Chinese team “Team OMG” eventually took the top spot for the first-person perspective (FPP) mode, beating out strong competitors from Europe and South Korea.
China’s Yao Hao dominated the FPP tournament, surviving longer than anyone else and racking up an incredible 34 kills within the game. He took home an extra 20,000 US dollars in prize money, showing that Chinese players have come into their own.

The South Korean video game company Bluehole developed and published this online multiplayer battle royale game in March 2017. PUBG has become one of the best-selling games in its genre with over 50 million sold across all platforms. The mobile version, which was developed by China’s Tencent Games and PUBG Corp., has more than 10 million active players, according to Sensor Tower.
The surging popularity of eSports has given it wider recognition. Earlier this month, international sports authorities even hosted a forum in Switzerland to discuss the possible integration of eSports into the Olympics. For the upcoming Asian Games, two computer games – Hearthstone and StarCraft II – will be included, making it the first time in history for eSports to be recognized by a regional organizing body of the International Olympic Committee.
