WPBSA China Championship: Ding Junhui eases past Wells 5-1

Sports Scene

China's top ranked player Ding Junhui crushed Welshman Daniel Wells 5-1 in the first round of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) China Championship in Guangzhou.

In their last meeting, back in 2001, Ding had won 4-1 before winning Tuesday's match with a similar result 17 years later.

However, it was Wells who clinched the first frame.

Ding quickly evened the score in style with a break of 103.

The Chinese was lucky enough to run up a break of 125 for his second straight century.

The 31-year-old sank the blue in the fourth and his break of 79 was enough for a 3-1 lead before the interval.

While leading 71-32 in the fifth frame, Ding left Wells a tough shot and the Welshman offered up a long chance for the Chinese.

Subsequently, Ding rattled the red in the corner and then watched it deposit itself in the middle pocket. He benefited from more luck on home soil and went on to win the frame.

Ding eventually wrapped up the sixth 65-24 for a 5-1 victory and will now face compatriot Yuan Sijun in the second round tonight.
