US President Donald Trump called off his planned June 12 summit meeting with Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) leader Kim Jong Un in a letter released by the White House on Thursday.

Shortly after DPRK's demolition of its "famous and secret" nuclear site, Trump responded with the surprising letter.

"I was very much looking forward to being there with you," Trump said in the letter. "Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting."

"I felt a wonderful dialogue was building up between you and me, and ultimately, it is only that dialogue that matters," Trump added in the letter.

"If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write," he added.

Earlier in the month, Trump had announced via Twitter that the summit between himself and Kim would take place on June 12 in Singapore.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee when news broke that Trump had cancelled the summit.

Pompeo read Trump’s letter to Kim during his hearing, which was earlier scheduled to discuss budget issues.

Several hours earlier, the DPRK has completely dismantled its Punggye-ri nuclear test ground "to ensure the transparency of discontinuance of nuclear tests," according to KCNA.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that his meeting with DPRK's top leader Kim Jong Un on nuclear issues "will absolutely happen," though the day before, Trump hinted that his scheduled meeting with Kim may be delayed.

Earlier today, a senior DPRK official also said remarks by the US vice president comparing the country to Libya were "ignorant and stupid."
