China on Tuesday has called on the US to stop undermining its sovereignty and security, urging Washington to be a contributor to peace and stability in the South China Sea, not a destroyer.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang briefed on Beijing's position at a regular press conference while commenting on recent US accusation that China has militarized the South China Sea and harassed US warships that were exercising "freedom of navigation operations" (FONOPs).
China has indisputable sovereignty over the islands in the South China Sea and their adjacent waters, which means it is incontrovertible to conduct peacebuilding activities on it, including deploying necessary defense facilities, Lu said.
"It has nothing to do with militarization."
The spokesman noted that it is the US who sends military planes and warships to the South China Sea frequently under the banner of the so-called FONOPs that are creating tensions and conducting militarization.
