China firmly opposes a US warship's entry into the waters around China's islands and reefs in the South China Sea, said China's Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Wu Qian on Tuesday.
According to Wu, a US guided missile destroyer arbitrarily entered waters around China's islands and reefs in the South China Sea on September 30.
A Chinese missile destroyer immediately conducted an identification and warning process to drive it away, said Wu.
On the same day, the Chinese Foreign Ministry also expressed strong dissatisfaction and opposition to the US move.
China strongly urges the US to stop "provocative" actions and to "immediately correct its mistake so as not to damage Sino-US relations and regional peace and stability," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying.
Hua emphasized that China has irrefutable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and their adjacent waters.
China will take all necessary measures to defend national sovereignty and security, said Hua.
