China called on G7 leaders on Wednesday to stop making "irresponsible remarks", as a response to a joint communique issued by G7 foreign ministers on the situation in the East and South China Seas.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said at a press conference on Wednesday that China strongly opposed the communique released at a recent G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Canada, which expressed concerns about the situation in the East and South China Seas and the human rights situation in China.
The G7 comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US.
Lu said that China's position on the maritime issue is clear and consistent. China has always been committed to properly resolving disputes with all nations involved through negotiations, jointly maintaining peace and stability in the East and South China Seas, and safeguarding freedom of navigation and overflight, and safety of sea lanes.
With regard to human rights issues, Chinese government has always attached great importance to and promoted the development of human rights. China has made great achievements in this area and the Chinese people have the most say in this matter, Lu said.
"We demand that these countries respect objective facts, respect the efforts of the countries in the region to maintain stability and focus on cooperation, and stop irresponsible remarks," Lu said. He called on the G7 and other nations to abandon ideological biases and objectively and impartially view the development of human rights in China and stop using human rights issues to interfere in China's internal affairs.
